“135th story”
Pegah was the head nurse of the surgical department of a hospital.
Pegah says:
Between all the patients on the crowded floor, a couple drew my attention. The wife was sick, and the husband brought her from their village to the big town for her critical surgery. She had a tumor in her brain, and it was going to be a very complicated operation.
The wife insisted on going home and said she doesn’t need surgery. She reminded her husband that they couldn’t afford the hospital, and for a fifty percent chance of surviving, it won’t be smart to do the surgery.
Out of their conversations, I figured that they have two children, their daughter was in university and their son in high school. Every night the husband called from a payphone in the hallway to his son, and the conversation was always the same: “Your mother is fine, we will come home soon. Did you water mother’s plants? Keep the house clean, and you know how important it is to her. Take care of yourselves.”
After a long stressful surgery, the wife came out alive, and everything went well. I saw the joy and happiness in the husband’s face. He sat beside his wife’s bed until she opened her eyes.”
The husband’s eyes were playing firework out of happiness. He jumped towards the payphone again and was sending the same message to his son.
I was passing by and saw the husband talking, without holding the phone. He pointed at me to please don’t say a word.
Then he whispered: “We sold the house to pay for her surgery. I didn’t want her to worry. Now that she is well again, everything will be alright, that’s all I wanted.”
I have seen many flowers, candies, and teddies to show love to their loved ones in this hospital. But I have never seen a pure love like this before.
Being a genuinely human and love someone indeed is just beautiful and priceless.

I wonder why on Earth people have to pay for surgery. Maybe I’m just an old socialist.

I believe it’s every human’s right to be insured by their governments.

Sadly, here in the USA, selling our home is the only option for many families when faced with a life-threatening illness that requires surgery and hospitalization.

Health insurance should be available for every citizen, our health doesn’t matter to our governments.

In Canada, you’ve got a much better health care system than we do.
