Level One

As the ambulance took my Dad’s body to the hospital, the neighbor’s carried our bodies like we were corpses too.

My Mom was continuously screaming and crying. I was holding Arash and Ashkan tight and begging God: “Please, let my Dad be alive.”

I was only fourteen, Arash six and Ashkan two. Jaleh was sixteen years old, taking care of her four-month-old son at home, not knowing what we were witnessing that night.

She was home alone, probably praying for her husband to come back safe from the foolish war of Iran and Iraq.

When we got to the hospital, we saw my Dad’s body on the portable bed of the ambulance right on the pavement, covered with a white sheet up to his head.

We all screamed, “Oh. No. This can’t be good news.”

My uncle came along with some policemen. He was screaming while pointing at my Mother: “She killed my brother!”

Everything was blurry; words were unfair. We had just lost our father, could anyone comfort us?

I was confused, Arash was panicking, and Ashkan was crying. I couldn’t shuffle the most recent events of our lives, to figure out what could have lead to this. The experience didn’t make any sense at that moment.

The same uncle who accused us of being the killers took us to his home.
