“44th story”
First published: June.21.2018
330 Words
Adam was 18 when his aunt found out that her husband was having an affair with his secretary.
The secretary got pregnant and her husband wanted to marry her. Adam’s aunt tried for years but couldn’t get pregnant. She knew her husband would leave her eventually because he wanted his own child.
Adam’s aunt divorced her husband at the age of 46.
To fulfill her loneliness and get rid of the sadness, she started drawing and painting classes to learn what she always said, was her passion.
Her drawings were so embarrassing and if no one knew, they would think a little kindergartner drew them. To Adam, she was a real loser and he was very ashamed of her. Adam thought: “She was 46, she should work harder and think of her retirement, not waste her time on painting and making a fool of herself.”
Adam’s father was one year older than his aunt. Adam’s father never did these crazy silly things; he just worked hard. He was always very focused.
Years passed and Adam became 40 years old, living in another country, educated, and having a good life. One day when Adam called home, his sister picked up the phone. She said Mom went to visit our aunt’s painting gallery. Adam’s sister was there staying with Dad.
“Aunt’s gallery?!” Adam asked.
His sister said: “Yes, she’s a famous painter. She had several successful art shows and sold many of her paintings. She even teaches drawing and painting.”
Adam remembered the day that he thought his aunt was a loser and his father wasn’t. Now Adam could see how healthy and happy his aunt was and his father almost the same age is a tired retired man who only solves puzzles, drinks tea, and goes for walks thinking about his old days, but Adam’s aunt built a happy and successful retirement.
Adam’s aunt taught Adam how not to be a loser; to follow dreams and never be embarrassed about something you’re passionate about.
Cheers to your Aunt! That’s great that she kept pursuing her passion and didn’t give up, a great role model!

I think that the moral of this story could be…do what you love and love what you do. When my children were in high school and began thinking about what they wanted to do next, this was the advice that I offered. It had worked for me! Thank-you!

Starting over later in life is not easy, especially after a divorce. While we take baby steps moving forward, others may laugh at our efforts behind our backs. With persistence in pursuing our goals and belief in our dream, we can and do succeed.
