A story by Laleh Chini:

Bushehr is an important part of the Persian Gulf. It has beautiful sandy beaches. It was the great attraction for tourists before the revolution. People loved to visit beautiful views of the Persian Gulf.

Fridays are the “weekend” in Iran. We had family gatherings and picnics every single Friday.

On a Friday we went to the beach. As we spread the picnic set, a family came near us and settled there.

They had three sons close to our age so all the adults and kids quickly became friends.

They were from the capital of Iran and had recently moved to Bushehr because of their second son’s health condition. The mother said that their second son had severe Asthma, and doctors had suggested that living near the sea would help to calm his lungs and get easy on the Asthma. Both parents were teachers, they had started teaching in Bushehr and everything was going very well for them. Their son hadn’t had any asthma attacks since their move.

Us kids went closer to the water to dig some holes and build a castle. We watched the holes get filled with water as each wave came in and that was very enjoyable. Then we all went for a swim. We stayed very close to the shore and our parents watched us every second.

The weather was good and the beach was very crowded. We were starving after swimming, we came out of the water to eat. After a few seconds, we heard a very loud scream from the mother of the three boys.

The second son with asthma wasn’t back with us. We really didn’t notice. Our parents rushed to the water to find him. The crowded beach got very quiet and every other parent came to help to find the boy.

All the men walked straight to the water with clothes on to see if they can find the boy, and all the women were praying and biting their fingers looking into the sea.

Unfortunately, they found the boy’s body. They laid him on the sand and tried so hard to bring him back but it was the end of his journey.

That was the first dead body I saw in my life. Sadly, it was that of a preschool boy. A new-made friend, the same age as me.

    Anyhow it’s very difficult for his parents to come out of their loss.

    I am so sorry you had to experience such a tragedy as a child, and I am also so sorry for the child who was lost and for his family. I have seen the waters of the Persian Gulf, and they are absolutely beautiful. Perhaps that young boy’s life ended with the knowledge that he was surrounded by such beauty, and that gave him a sense of peace. Thank you for your post – my heart goes out to you. ❤️

    The loss of a child is a grief that never goes away. A hole in your heart that carries their name will always remain. In time, you will learn to live with that loss, but you will never be the same. “Acceptance is not about liking a situation. It is about acknowledging all that has been lost and learning to live with that loss.” – Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. This experience must have been extremely traumatic for you as a child. Thank-you for sharing this sad memory.

    Too sad but he has long since moved on, shocking for his family and all those on the beach that day! And more so for you as a pre-schooler to witness such a tragic event. It sounds like you still relive it but his grief is gone, time for you to move on …

    Laleh Khanum, literally my heart sank, reading the end of the story. I believe it is the most horrible experience to loose a child an I hope the family has found peace with it’s loss.

    It’s so tragic ! It’s terrible to see death so young … I can’t imagine your fear, your pain and I pray for the poor parents. It was something that no one should have to live… thank you for your whole narrative that I read with attention.

      Thanks a million dear friend for such kind comment, means a lot. Have a nice weekend. I went to French school for six months, back in 1988 was able to talk, read and watch French movies.
      Now I have forgotten and I regret it every second. I want to learn it back, don’t know where to start.😂

    We used to have a summer place on a lake and I know how quickly a child can disappear in the water. We knew a family who lost a 3 year old little girl. it was a rainy day and no one noticed she had gone outside. She fell off the dock and could not swim. Just seconds and she was gone. Forever. A sad story about the little boy Laleh but so well told.

    Those are experiences that definitely leave a mark in the soul. I remember very vividly a drowned tourist man in the beach in San Jose del Cabo (Mèxico). I`ll never forget his face.

    That’s the worst that can happen to parents, a child is not supposed to die before it’s parents pass. At least the boy has enjoyed a time of being free of his asthma.

    So very sad, but it is also heartwarming in the way to tell the story. How to cherish youth, cherish loved ones, and while there will always be a longing for what could have been there is never any doubt in what was and still is in memory.

    Very sad story indeed. Too bad the boy’s parents weren’t keeping a better watch of the child.

    I almost drowned when I was two. My Mom told the story of a man coming up to my Mom and Dad and asking if they were the parents of the child who had just gone under for the 2nd time. The story never made sense to me as I always wondered why the man hadn’t jumped in and saved me himself?!
