“53rd story”

It was the film festival for short films and people were so interested to watch them one by one and describe or analyze each one as we all love to do.
They saw a few 10-minute films and seemed like they enjoyed each and every one of them.
The last short film was about to start and people got even more excited because after this last one they could vote for the best film. The prize of the best 10-minute short film depended on people’s votes.
The film started with an image of a ceiling. Two minutes passed and people were waiting to see what would happen next. Four more minutes passed and the camera was still on the ceiling.
Some of the spectators left the cinema with anger. Eight minutes of the 10-minute film passed and the camera never left the ceiling. It was really boring and frustrating.
Everyone was mumbling and some were swearing. The film was going nowhere and it really didn’t seem like it would get any positive reviews or votes.
When the film reached the 9-minute mark, the camera moved to a young child laying on a bed who was paralyzed from the neck down by an accident caused by a drunken careless driver.
Then there came writing:
“This was just 10-minutes of my life and most of you weren’t patient enough to watch the film, now you know how the rest of my life looks like. Please be thankful for your health and abilities. Drive sober, other people care about their lives if you don’t for yours.”

Yep! Word Press needs more that a LIKE button! This was a beautiful and powerful share.
Had I been there….. I would have stayed for the whole film! After 57 seconds of ONLY a ceiling, it would have become obvious to me that there was going be a powerful ending!
In California, USA, there is a hands-off-law for cell phones when driving. You are NOT to touch your phone while driving!

When I was in the Air Force, there were Iranian airmen who were being trained by USAF airmen on radar maintenance. That was in Arizona, and was about two years before the Iranian Revolution. They were nice, but stayed to themselves.

I am very sorry for all that has happened. I was on an inspection trip when the revolution began being telecast on my tv. It was like watching “The Wide World Of Sports.”

I admit, I would have been getting antsy after a nine minutes of watching a movie featuring one shot of a ceiling, but quite the payoff at the end. A drunk driver left my friend’s father paralyzed and bedridden for decades.

Writing tip– in the narration, none of the sentences have any commas. If you structure your sentences with dependent clauses, and commas between two independent clauses, it will create better writing flow.

The film strikes at the heart of this young person’s life, filled with raw emptiness. When one gets behind the wheel of a car, there is the greatest need to use its size and energy in the safest manner.

This post also reminded me of the only Iranian movie I’ve seen: A Taste of Cherry. That was a long time ago, but it was also powerful.
