The king of a land noticed that one of his servants was very happy. He couldn’t stand it and had to ask him about his happiness.

The servant said: “I am happy your grace because I have a great wife and a healthy child. I work and can provide food and shelter for them. We don’t have much but I am grateful for what I have.”

The king later went to his minister and explained his servant’s happiness, and how he doesn’t like to see anyone happier than himself.

The minister said: “I will make sure to put stop to his happiness. He needs to become a part of group 99.”

The minister sent one sack of rice and one sack filled with 99 gold coins to the servant’s house.

When the servant went home, he saw the sacks and became very happy. He started to count the coins. He counted the coins three times and it still was 99 coins!

“That’s strange! Why 99? Why not 100 coins?” He said to his wife.

He searched everywhere to see if there is another coin he missed possibly, but he couldn’t find the 100th coin.

The next day, the servant wasn’t happy. He was thinking about that one gold coin. He had to save one coin to complete his coins. He had to work harder and put more hours for that. He was more tired and didn’t have his smile and kindness for his family anymore.

The minister had the servant monitored and told the king: “Your Grace, I told you if we put him in group 99 he would never be happy. They start becoming greedy and they want more.”

If we look closer, that’s our every day life and unfortunately greed always wins.

Prosperity is in 3 simple sentences:

Yesterday’s experience

Using today wisely

Having hope for tomorrow

But we waste it with 3 sentences:

Regretting yesterday

Wasting today

Fear of tomorrow

Dear friends;

Don’t forget to read my books.<3<3<3

  1. As ever, I like your instructional stories. With this one, were I the man, I would have given away 49 coins, so I could have a neat, round 50. After all, if I’ve been happy with none, why would I need so many.

  8. Always enjoy your tales, Laleh. This one, however, is a two-edge sword, as expressed by the king’s minister: “Your grace, I told you if we put him in group 99 he would never be happy. They start becoming greedy and they want more.” This is the excuse that the very rich use to continue paying workers a slave wage.

  15. Dear Laleh, first of all, I wanted to let you know, that I finally read you book, it was birthday present to myself to order it from Amazon. I couldn’t put it down. Within two days my emotions went from happiness to sadness, trying to understand the actions of the women and accepting that they had to live with their non-choices, being impressed with couragesness and being filled with compassion towards all the women through out the different generations. Thinking that is your families story makes me shudder, yet I do hope that times have changed for the better for women’s lives. It is an intense and grapping novel. Through the family of my ex Persian husband understand the Persian culture a bit more, as I know of the history of the grandmother’s lives. Thank you for writing such a great novel , to bring it to the Universe, your voice needed to be heard. Thank you Laleh joon.
