An old lady had a dream one night. She saw God in her vision and told him: “Dear God, I am very lonely, please become my guest and visit me at my home. Keep me, companied.”

God promised that tomorrow, he would be her guest and visit her in her home.

The old lady woke up, very happy. She started to clean her home deep down. Everywhere was spot clean and shiny. Then she went out and bought some fresh bread and cooked her best dish, and waited for God to come to visit her.

Finally, her doorbell rang, and she jumped to open the door. There was an older man. He said: “Sorry to bother you, but I am starving and a great smell came out of your house. Can you give me a little food so I wouldn’t have to sleep hungry again?”

The old woman screamed and said: “How dare you knocked on my door. The good smell is for a dear guest, and I don’t have enough to share.”

She went inside and continued to wait for God.

The doorbell rang again, and there was a little boy who said: “Sorry to bother you, I am freezing. Do you have any extra jacket so I can keep warm this winter?”

The old lady shut the door angrily without saying anything to the boy and mumbled while going back inside.

The doorbell rang for the third time, and she ran to the door. There was a young woman who said: “I lost my husband a few months ago, and have two kids. Can you give me money so I could buy food for my children?”

The old lady sent the young mother away with insult.

It was getting late, and God didn’t come to the old woman’s house as he promised. The old lady went to sleep, disappointed, and heartbroken.

She had a dream and saw God again and told him: “You promised to visit me. I waited all day. How come you didn’t show up?”

God said: “I never break my promise. I came to visit you three times, but you shut your door on me.”

  2. I smile. How to recognise spirit within the flesh. Myself, God [a god,] often snuggles me warm in bed. I feel safely held and intensely content. All one needs do is to be open, and to ask.

  6. An instructive story. Deeds are important, not declarations. We forget that God is love and will judge our love for others.

  8. I saw that coming, Laleh 🙂 I’ve found in life that the most unexpected people can cross our paths or enter our lives during our moments of need. As your story teaches us, we should never consider any other person unworthy of our help or consideration.

  15. A profound story. It made me think of the Bible passage: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me…Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matt. 25: 35-36, 40 NIV).
