“74th story”

A story by Laleh Chini:
Ali was a smart and rich boy from “Angel district.” Angel district had one beautiful street with wonderful houses filled with wealthy people.
The rest of Angel district had normal houses and apartments mostly rented to residents and only a few were owned.
Ali loved writing and his passion made him win several literature awards in high school. His articles were published in his school’s monthly journal and some were great enough to be published in the local newspaper.
It was Ali’s last year of high school and he had received a full scholarship in journalism.
Ali’s father owned several apartment buildings, plazas, and shopping stores in the district and his main income was based on the rents.
Ali’s father was a cold-hearted man who had no sympathy for others. He even gave charity just to pay less annual tax, not out of generosity.
One day, Ali’s best friend “Nima,” asked Ali to come to his home at 7 Pm to study for their next day’s exam.
It was a rainy night and Ali always liked to walk or take buses instead of using his father’s luxury cars.
When Ali got closer to Nima’s place, he saw his father yelling and insulting Nima’s father in front of all the neighbors and family members. Nima’s father was a simple construction worker who was getting a little older with severe back pain.
This caused him to work less and struggle financially. For that reason, Nima’s father was late on rent for more than three months. Ali’s father asked them to evacuate immediately and Nima’s father was crying in front of everyone. This scene broke Ali’s heart. He decided not to approach Nima’s house and went back home because he didn’t want Nima to feel embarrassed.
That wasn’t the first time that Ali had seen and heard his father’s cruel behavior toward unfortunate people.
A few months passed when Ali’s father threw a party and invited their rich neighbors.
The main reason for this was to get their votes on him becoming the representative of the Angel District.
To Ali, a representative had to be on the peoples’ side; someone who could relate to their problems, not just be able to open better opportunities for rich people and try to be more famous and powerful themselves.
Ali wrote a powerful article about his father’s actions towards Nima’s father and many others in Angel District throughout the years and named it “I Choose Justice” and published it in the local newspaper.

Oooh, exciting times in the inappropriately named ‘Angel district’ where justice it seems is a dish best served cold in newspaper by an upstanding son.
Quite what Ali’s father might do next is unknown, but I’d imagine Ali will be well accommodated by friends and supporters alike 🙂
