“66th story”

First published: Nov.22.2018

Sultan Mahmood was a very atrocious king of his time. There are many stories about him and his oppression. He is notorious for claiming to own every beautiful woman that he saw or heard about from others.

It didn’t matter to Sultan Mahmood if the beautiful women had husbands, children or families of any kind, he would separate them against their will and take them for himself.

Many women covered their faces in public. They didn’t send their young daughters out to keep them safe from the Sultan. For that reason, Sultan Mahmood rewarded gold coins to anyone who reported beautiful women that were hiding.

There once was a carpenter who was a very hardworking young man. He had a gorgeous wife, who always covered herself to be safe, but somehow an unknown person reported her beauty to the king to be rewarded.  Sultan Mahmood came to visit the carpenter and his wife with his soldiers on horses.

He walked into the carpenter’s little Hut and asked his wife to uncover her face. When the king saw the carpenter’s wife, he was mesmerized by her beauty. The king looked at the carpenter and said; “You have until dawn to carve 1000 wheat grains out of wood. I will send my minister early in the morning to count your wooden carvings. If it is less than 1000 grains, he will bring your wife to my palace and she will marry me.”

The king left the young couple. The carpenter’s wife started crying and knew it was impossible to carve even 20 grains until morning. But the young carpenter was calm and started carving and kept saying: “God is more powerful than Sultan Mahmood. God is Grander than Sultan Mahmood. God is Superior to Sultan Mahmood.”

The carpenter carved 40 grains by dawn and his wife didn’t stop crying. She said: “How can you possibly be calm. The minister will be here any minute to take me.”

The carpenter said: “Don’t worry my dear. God is bigger than Sultan Mahmood.”

Daylight started to show its brightness when they heard soldiers making an announcement. The young couple was shaking.

The minister was there in the allies but not to take the carpenter’s wife, he was there just to let people know that Sultan Mahmood had died during the night.

  13. When Sultan Mahmood lost his tenure on earth, a loud cry of joy erupted and reached the heavens.

The sultan, now stripped of all his adornments of wealth and power, stood naked before the universe.

    ‘Just rewards,’ said a voice.

‘A lesson well learned,’ said another.

‘A teacher to man,’ said a third

And there were many more observations, each with a different slant. Each true in its own right.

    Peace,
    Eric

  16. God doesn’t have to demonstrate how powerful His, how much grander, how superior, or even how bigger. Faith the size of a mustard seed is all you need, to have His angels step in on your behalf!

    A lovely story!

  25. I always love reading the stories you share because the morals they possess hit the heart in such a powerful way. This one resonates with me because there are so many experiences I have had in my life where it seemed like there was no way out and then miraculously a door has been opened to deliver me from my woes. God is always there and I’m so thankful for that. Thank you for this profound post, Laleh. Really encouraging and uplifting!
