A donkey worked very hard for an old man for years. The donkey was getting old and was no longer as fast as young days, but he was still loyal and tried hard to do the usual daily tasks so he wouldn’t be a burden.

One day, the donkey fell into a deep well in the old man’s farm.

The old man ran towards the sound of the donkey’s cry. 

The old man realized getting the donkey out would be impossible.

He thought: “The donkey was old. He wanted to buy a young donkey soon. This well was dried and he wanted to fill and dig a new one. So, he will kill two birds with one stone, filling the well and burying the old donkey.”

The old man asked his neighbours to come and help him. The neighbours started throwing soil into the well.

When the donkey realized what awaited him, he began to cry loudly. But no one paid any attention. The smart donkey stepped on the soil they were dropping into the well.

After a while when everyone looked carefully noticed, that the donkey had shaken off the soil that had fallen on its back. The donkey ended up on the surface and jumped out of the well.

Life presents us with challenges, we just have to find a way to climb out of them and not allow them to bury us.

    Wonderful story.
    It reminds me of the Urdu story, in which animal was dog.
    It shows story is a vagabond.
    Amazing it is. 🙂

    This was beautiful. Reminds me of a song by a gospel group The Williams Brothers entitled “The Goat” – always love your stories.

    The donkey certainly was determined to live and to carry on, but I hope the old man didn’t abandon him still for a younger one. An Interesting and inspiring story, Laleh.
