The king of a land noticed that one of his servants was very happy. The King had to ask him about the reason for his happiness.

The servant said: “I am happy your grace because I have a great wife and a healthy child. I work and can provide food and shelter for them. We don’t have much but I am grateful for what I have.”

The king later went to his minister and explained his servant’s happiness.

The King said: “You know I  don’t like to see anyone happier than myself.”

The minister said: “I will stop his happiness. He needs to become a part of the group ninety-nine.”

The minister sent one sack of rice and one sack filled with ninety-nine coins to the servant’s house, as the king’s generosity for his happiness.

When the servant went home, he saw the sacks and became very happy. He started to count the coins and reached ninety-nine.

He counted the coins three times and it still was ninety-nine coins!

“That’s strange! Why ninety-nine? Why not one hundred coins?” He said to his wife.

He looked to see if there was another coin where he was counting.

He was thinking about that one coin. Now the worriedness, and greed of having more occupied the servant’s mind.

The servant wasn’t happy any longer. He was thinking about that one coin.

He had to work harder to make more coins. He had to collect and save more and be careful to spend less.

He was more tired and didn’t have his smile and kindness for his family anymore, and he didn’t enjoy his job like before.

The minister monitored the servant and told the king: “Your Grace, I told you if we put him in the group ninety-nine, he will become miserable, because, greed always wins to make your life harder and unhealthy.”

If we look closer, that’s our everyday life, unfortunately, greed always wins.

Prosperity is in three simple sentences:

Yesterday’s experience, using today wisely, and having hope for tomorrow.

But we waste it with three sentences:

Regretting yesterday, wasting today, and fear of tomorrow.

  1. As ever, I like your instructional stories. With this one, were I the man, I would have given away 49 coins, so I could have a neat, round 50. After all, if I’ve been happy with none, why would I need so many.

  2. What an amazing story which explained reality so beautifully…. Loved it. 💕

  3. Great story and message with much truth. 🙂

  6. I have heard of this story. It is really didactic.

  7. An intricate story that is really chunneling around my brain. You’re making me think.

  8. Always enjoy your tales, Laleh. This one, however, is a two-edge sword, as expressed by the king’s minister: “Your grace, I told you if we put him in group 99 he would never be happy. They start becoming greedy and they want more.” This is the excuse that the very rich use to continue paying workers a slave wage.

  15. Dear Laleh, first of all, I wanted to let you know, that I finally read you book, it was birthday present to myself to order it from Amazon. I couldn’t put it down. Within two days my emotions went from happiness to sadness, trying to understand the actions of the women and accepting that they had to live with their non-choices, being impressed with couragesness and being filled with compassion towards all the women through out the different generations. Thinking that is your families story makes me shudder, yet I do hope that times have changed for the better for women’s lives. It is an intense and grapping novel. Through the family of my ex Persian husband understand the Persian culture a bit more, as I know of the history of the grandmother’s lives. Thank you for writing such a great novel , to bring it to the Universe, your voice needed to be heard. Thank you Laleh joon.
