“232nd story”

Ghodrat’s father had a small land in their village beside the river, and they cropped watermelons and tomatoes all year.

When the products were ready, Ghodrat helped his father to put them in his dad’s blue truck and then they parked on a safe wide part of the roadside, set up a shade, and sold kilo by kilo.

One of the days, a green truck parked beside their blue truck and said: “I want one hundred kilos of watermelon.

Ghodrat’s father weighed each watermelon and placed them in the green truck, and Ghodrat added up all the one hundred kilos to calculate the amount. When they turned to put the scale out of the way, the green truck ran away with all the one-hundred-kilo watermelons.

Ghodrat and his father ran after it and screamed but the truck was fast and disappeared.

For days they asked everyone in their village, or other villages near them if they knew of any green trucks.

They check any green truck on the road if the driver is a watermelon thief.

Ten years passed and they forgot about that day and the thief.

Ghodrat finished high school and went to the university.

one time when It was near an election day, his friend said: “Are you free tomorrow?”

Ghodrat said: “Yes. What’s up?”

His friend said: “There is an election campaign and they just want a crowd, and will also give free lunch. The nominee’s goal is to fight for people and not let the government steal from them, so we can say it is for a good cause, too. ” And laughed.

Ghodrat agreed and the next day he participated in the speech. The nominee spoke very well and shared how he would work so hard to fight the government for the people’s rights.

Ghodrat was listening carefully, and felt like this guy is familiar somehow?

When he paid close attention, he remembered that the guy was the green truck’s driver, who ran away with one hundred kilos of their watermelons.

Ghodrat couldn’t take it anymore, in the middle of the speech stood up and said: “Sorry do you have any plan for watermelon sales persons, too?”

People laughed.

The speaker said: “I guess one joke in the middle of my speech was nice.”

Ghodrat said: “No, I am very serious.”

The guy said: “If you are here from my opposition to ruin my speech, please walk out.”

Ghodrat said: “I know you are rich now and drive a better car, but if you could remember your green truck, you probably would know what I am talking about.”

The speaker said: “You stay here please after my speech, I think we need to talk privately.”

Ghodrat waited to talk to the thief in private.

The speaker said: “OK, what is the price of your watermelons in today’s market? I will pay you in full, but promise that you will forget about the past.”

  1. Oh, I hope Ghodrat won’t forget about the past! The green truck driver/politician isn’t trustworthy, and if Ghodrat gives in to the condition he lowers himself to the same shitty criminal mindset. 😮

  6. Well done Laleh. This narrative speaks with a powerful lesson. Too often, the greed of a few attempts to displace the goodness of others. May our goodness always walk upon a higher, more righteous road.
