Once upon a time,

an old man had a watermill beside a big river.

He made flour out of wheat. He owned one cow, eight sheep, a few hens, and forty palm trees. He was rich and had a comfortable life.

One day a man riding on a donkey, holding a few camels and lots of big bags of gold ran into the old man’s place. The man was running away from the king’s soldiers.

The thief said: “I would like to pass this river, and if you build a bridge for me, and hide me while it gets ready, I will give you a big bag of gold.”

After seeing the bag of gold the old man got greedy and accepted to build a bridge for the thief, so the old man could become more rich.

The next day the old man started cutting his palm trees one by one to build the column of the bridge.

The old man worked very hard all day and dreamed of how he would live easily, without needing to work hard in his watermill, and his future life would be more comfortable.

The old man thought to himself that he wouldn’t need his animals anymore in the future, so killed and ate them one by one, sharing with the thief.

To make the top part of the bridge the old man had to use all the woods of his hut, and even his watermill.

The bridge was finished and the thief was ready to pass the bridge and go as far as possible so, the king’s soldiers wouldn’t put him in prison for stealing all the golds.

The thief said: “I will pass my camels first to make sure the bridge is strong enough, then I will come back to take my donkey and give your share of gold.”

The thief began passing the bridge and when he went to the other side safely, he started a fire and destroyed the bridge.

The fire brought attention to the kingdom, and the king’s soldiers found out that the thief was hiding there and the old man helped him to run away.

Not only did the old man lose his beautiful watermill, hut, animals, and comfortable life, but he also went to prison for the rest of his life.
