In 2023, a white couple, Jeanne Kay Whitefeather and Donald Ray Lantz, were convicted of severely abusing the five Black children they had adopted. The case received national attention because prosecutors described how the children were treated in conditions resembling forced labour on the couple’s property.

The couple adopted five siblings from Minnesota and moved them to a rural property in West Virginia. Authorities later discovered.

The children were allegedly forced to perform heavy labour on the farm. They were reportedly locked in a shed or outbuilding at times. There were serious allegations of physical abuse and neglect.

Prosecutors argued that the treatment reflected racist motives and dehumanization. During the trial, evidence was presented showing extreme neglect and punishment.

In 2023, both adults were convicted on multiple charges, including child abuse and forced labour-related offences. The case shocked many people because adoption is meant to provide safety and care, not exploitation.

This case raised major concerns about oversight after adoption placements, Protection of adopted children across state lines, Racial bias and transracial adoption challenges, and the need for stronger child welfare monitoring.

It’s important to say clearly that this was criminal abuse, not adoption in general. The vast majority of adoptive parents provide loving, safe homes. But when oversight fails, vulnerable children can be harmed.

Another couple, Jennifer and Sarah Hart, adopted six children (most of them Black) from Texas. Over time, authorities and neighbours reported serious concerns about abuse, neglect, and mistreatment. There were allegations that the children were deprived of food and physically punished.

In 2018, the case ended tragically. The family’s SUV was driven off a cliff in California, resulting in the deaths of Jennifer and Sarah Hart and several of the children. Investigators later concluded it was intentional.

Many people were especially disturbed because the family had presented themselves publicly as progressive and loving parents, even appearing in viral photos at social justice events.

It’s important to be very careful with wording like “adopted for slaves.” While there have been horrific cases of child abuse, modern adoption is not connected to slavery in a legal sense. Using that term can unintentionally spread misinformation.
