A story by Laleh Chini:

When I was little, used to get car sick even during short drives. I always had rolled down the window and let my head out to get fresh air. One day, my grandmother had a lunch party.

There were many different family members who I hadn’t seen before. The party was very formal and we had to be on our best behavior.

There was an old woman who was very important to my grandmother so we all had to be extra polite around her.

When the party was finished, my grandmother asked my father to give the old woman a ride on our way home. We all said our goodbyes and got into the car with a few other family members to give them rides as well. The respected old lady, my sister, aunts, cousins and I were all stuffed up in the back seat of the car.

This happened 40 years ago where there was no law for wearing seat belts in Iran, and no one cared how many people would ride in one single car. We usually had ten to sixteen family members in one car; honestly, I have no idea how we did that but there must have been more peace and love back then.

So, my father started driving. We were still trying to be polite in front of that old lady. I didn’t feel very good, my car sickness was getting worse every minute, I wasn’t able to get closer to the window as the car was very crowded and I was feeling all the food I had at the party in the back of my throat.

As soon as I opened my mouth to tell my mother that I didn’t feel good, I threw up on that old lady; the most respected member of our family.

  1. Oh dear! That was most unfortunate. How did she react? Do you remember?

  2. Car sickness has always been a part of my travels too! Your story was great… all the way to the end. Oops! 😬😆🤗

  3. 😂😂😂🤣🤣❤

  4. For once, we all saw that coming. Excruciating memory

  5. Great story,I used to get car sick when I was a kid specially in summer time.

  6. Ohhh gosh….i enjoyed reading this .

  7. OH No! I hope that you and the lady were still able to be friends! You couldn’t help it! I am sure you were so embarrassed!

  8. I like your stories very much and you know, I saw you on youtube. You look very pretty!:-)

  9. I’ll bet that endeared you to the family, but unfortunately such accidents do happen!

  10. As always a pleasure!

  11. That was thrilling to read.

  12. I know I shouldn’t laugh, but… 😀 😀 😀 ! Wonderful story.

  13. Oh dear! So unfortunate for a little girl. I sympathize about the car sickness. It used to affect me too.

  14. Awe, you were just a child, which didn’t know any other way.

  15. Bad timing indeed! Another wonderful childhood story! 😊

  16. Sorry Laleh about that, you were young and not to blame. I am sure the old lady forgave you.

  17. Hmmm I think that was a humbling experience for the respected lady but so unfortunate. Memories make funny stories thereafter. But what did your grandmother say when she found out???

  18. That’s unfortunate 🙁 I can imagine how you must have felt. And reading by your replies, I am glad that the old lady was kind. 😊
(I haven’t been active for a few days but I always drop on Friday’s to read your stories. Loved it as always ❤️.)

  19. Unfortunate at the time but what a great story it gave you to tell

  20. I shouldn’t be laughing but I wonder what did the lady think 🙂

And thank you so much for chancing upon my blog 🙂

  21. Thanks for sharing! Your story, did she scold you? What you did after vomiting??

  22. What an experience. For you, a good child, terrible … There were so many interesting events in your life. I admire each time.

  23. Sounds like we had similar childhoods.😘

  24. Reblogged this on Have We Had Help? and commented:
    Another anecdote from Laleh…

  25. Oh yes, that would have been me, I always got car sick, the most miserable feeling and has led to more than a few disasters.

  26. Thank goodness she was so kind about it. You must have been mortified.

I have difficulty recalling especially embarrassing events from my childhood — not that I often try. Except sometimes when I am trying to get to sleep. Then one will come back now and then. Not usually, but now and then.

  27. Bad timing! But this is the prerogative of the children. ***lol*** So unfortunate this story ended for this woman, so great and true is this though. I’m looking forward to many more such stories in your new book. Congratulations! Michael 🙂

  28. With relief I read in one of the first comments here that the old lady reacted very kind – how wonderful!

  29. Thanks for you like of my post, “Liar;” you are very kind.

  30. Yes. She was a Jewess, whom saved the Jews in Persia from extinction, about 474 B.C.

  31. Laleh, I am so excited about your first novel! Congratulations! I’ve pre-ordered it for Kindle. I look forward to receiving it on October 1st.

  32. Talk about embarrassing moments, Laleh… Your story brings back so many memories for me. We too had a large family and cars and trucks were always packed when we got together for celebrations. AND, I too got carsick many times… Fortunately, I always had paper bags to get sick in… Thanks for reminding me of those good old days.

  33. Oh, no! I can only imagine how embarrassing that was.

  34. Ik kan je begrijpen.Ik was ook autozieken ging vanaf ik 10 jaar was overl naar toe met de fiets.

  35. Oh my! How did the respected one react? Thank you for the story but also the follow on I Write Her! I hope you enjoy my work. 🙂

  36. Oh dear a memory will haunt for life but I bet that growing up it became a funny memory and even the old lady after she cleaned up might have had a laugh😉

  37. Unfortunate!! Hope all understood the problem of the boy

  38. this reminds me of my childhood memory, owning a car was a luxury back then, it’s only for the rich. so it’s common to see cars were packed with two family members, it could be 10, 16 or even more, smaller children get to sit on the grown ups lap, we lived in a tropical country and there is no air conditioner 😁 so the air is hot and filled with so many aroma, perfume, sweat, the food that we brought, i’ve always asked to sit next to the window ^^

  39. I like your stories.

  40. Oops. Do you write all of your stories by yourself ma’am?

  41. Hi Laleh: I will enjoy looking at your blog. I’m Mark, the guy behind moveisalamark.com, which you just started following–at least I hope so. For some reason, you were listed as following “Mark My Words”, an empty site I discontinued, and I do NOT understand why WordPress has people following that one, or notifying me that they are, instead of the correct site. Anyhow, glad you will be watching MoviesAlaMark and I am happy to be discovering your site as well. Cheers,Mark

  42. One of those awful “oh dear” moments.

  43. I enjoy all of your stories. This must have been unforgettable for everyone. I think all of us have had an experience like this 😊

  44. Ouch, what a story. I could see where your story was going all along yet I found it a very good read all the way to the end. I hope the elder lady had enough grace to forgive you. In reality this was your parents fault, they knew you had this problem, they should have insisted that you were seated beside a window.

  45. I forgot a moment ago, being I liked the read I am going to reblog this for you Ma’am.

  46. My dear Laleh, congratulations upon the publication of your book today! I’ve already started reading it. What a precious life full of tragedy and repeatedly being let down by the adults in her life! You wrote this very powerfully in first person. You truly have a gift for writing. Keep at it!

  47. I too had challenges with car sickness and remember trips to grandparents and how I felt so sick. I try to be conscientious today when someone rides with me and not make quick turns and movements. I’m glad you were not traumatized by negative remarks from the lady nor other riders. Life happens. 🙂

  48. Hopefully they made sure you had a window seat in the future. I do love a story that gives a window into another culture. It promotes understanding and I thank you.

Thank you for following one of my blogs.

  49. It happens to us all at one time or another, bless your heart!

  50. i hope the old lady didn’t mind.
can relate to this story a lot.
I still get car sick but usually during long drives.
    best wishes, Laleh.
    thanks for sharing 🙂

  51. Some accidents seem destined to happen!

  52. That little girl could have been me. Great story.

  53. Reblogged this on By the Mighty Mumford and commented:
    eeee-uuu—!!!

  54. Oh no !😆
Sometimes this is the way things go. I hope the lady was gracious 🤩to you Laleh.

  55. I enjoyed this article and read it twice🤓Thank for sharing
