“55th story”
First Published: Sep.06.2018
A story by Laleh Chini:
When I was little, used to get car sick even during short drives. I always had rolled down the window and let my head out to get fresh air. One day, my grandmother had a lunch party.
There were many different family members who I hadn’t seen before. The party was very formal and we had to be on our best behavior.
There was an old woman who was very important to my grandmother so we all had to be extra polite around her.
When the party was finished, my grandmother asked my father to give the old woman a ride on our way home. We all said our goodbyes and got into the car with a few other family members to give them rides as well. The respected old lady, my sister, aunts, cousins and I were all stuffed up in the back seat of the car.
This happened 40 years ago where there was no law for wearing seat belts in Iran, and no one cared how many people would ride in one single car. We usually had ten to sixteen family members in one car; honestly, I have no idea how we did that but there must have been more peace and love back then.
So, my father started driving. We were still trying to be polite in front of that old lady. I didn’t feel very good, my car sickness was getting worse every minute, I wasn’t able to get closer to the window as the car was very crowded and I was feeling all the food I had at the party in the back of my throat.
As soon as I opened my mouth to tell my mother that I didn’t feel good, I threw up on that old lady; the most respected member of our family.

Thank goodness she was so kind about it. You must have been mortified.
I have difficulty recalling especially embarrassing events from my childhood — not that I often try. Except sometimes when I am trying to get to sleep. Then one will come back now and then. Not usually, but now and then.

You are very welcome. Esther put her life on the line so that her people in Persia could
be saved from total extinction. In the Book of Esther, the name, “God,” is not mentioned.
However, his Presence is clearly seen on every page. I have written an article on Esther.

Talk about embarrassing moments, Laleh… Your story brings back so many memories for me. We too had a large family and cars and trucks were always packed when we got together for celebrations. AND, I too got carsick many times… Fortunately, I always had paper bags to get sick in… Thanks for reminding me of those good old days.

this reminds me of my childhood memory, owning a car was a luxury back then, it’s only for the rich. so it’s common to see cars were packed with two family members, it could be 10, 16 or even more, smaller children get to sit on the grown ups lap, we lived in a tropical country and there is no air conditioner 😁 so the air is hot and filled with so many aroma, perfume, sweat, the food that we brought, i’ve always asked to sit next to the window ^^

Hi Laleh: I will enjoy looking at your blog. I’m Mark, the guy behind moveisalamark.com, which you just started following–at least I hope so. For some reason, you were listed as following “Mark My Words”, an empty site I discontinued, and I do NOT understand why WordPress has people following that one, or notifying me that they are, instead of the correct site. Anyhow, glad you will be watching MoviesAlaMark and I am happy to be discovering your site as well. Cheers,Mark

Ouch, what a story. I could see where your story was going all along yet I found it a very good read all the way to the end. I hope the elder lady had enough grace to forgive you. In reality this was your parents fault, they knew you had this problem, they should have insisted that you were seated beside a window.

I too had challenges with car sickness and remember trips to grandparents and how I felt so sick. I try to be conscientious today when someone rides with me and not make quick turns and movements. I’m glad you were not traumatized by negative remarks from the lady nor other riders. Life happens. 🙂
