The king of a fair kingdom tried hard to inform people of the importance of learning how to read and write.

The king gave speeches many times about; how to educate your children and teach them manners to respect their family and society. This way, we would be able to grow a peaceful kingdom.

But the people never listened, truly. They just participated in the king’s speech with respect.

The king asked a wise man to help him make people listen and be aware and up to date.

The wise man had a great idea.

All the people of the kingdom knew the wise man very well and respected his ideas.

The wise man asked the king to announce to the public that the wise man will have a speech tomorrow, and each person has to pay one coin to be able to listen to his address.

The next day hundreds of people stood in line to get into the place where the wise man was about to speak, even the ones who couldn’t afford to pay that one coin.

The wise man welcomed everyone and just repeated everything that the king said for years. People listened carefully and agreed with every single word.

At the end of the speech, the wise man said: “On the way out, you will get your coins back.”

People asked the reason, and the wise man said: “For years your fair king was trying to teach you what was best for you and your children, but you didn’t listen. Today you listen well because you paid for it.”

These days they bribe those wise men to tell people what is best for the governments, politicians, and the rich.

  6. Absolutely very fair true story
As it is told, people stand in que to pay and listen to some who are popular and great orators. But if their own people say these suggestions they are more ignorant.🙄

  11. For some reason, as your story developed, I knew right away that the people would get back their coins they had paid. There maybe many interpretations like money rules etc. , but at least it got them to listen to the words of truth. Am I interpreting this wrongly , since I saw your comment, that they sold their to the devil? Ugh maybe I missed some point here. Anyways , thank you Laleh for this story.

  21. When I opened my studio I gave everyone free classes and lost money because they wouldn’t show up. As soon as I started charging for them, they valued them and came. The king was a wise man like you are a wise story writer Laleh!
